Kick-off of the ATSD Task Group 2: DOIP Standard Development & Application

Dec. 15, 2020

On November 1, 2020, the kick-off meeting of ATSD task group 2, Digital Object Interface Protocol (DOIP) Standard Development & Application task group, was held online. More than 50 experts from about 30 organizations attended this meeting including Xinmin Gao, Director of DONA and chairman of ATSD board; Sam Sun, assistant to DONA chairman and chairman of ATSD Steering Committee; Xiaolong He, vice-chairman of ATSD Steering Committee; Dong Zhang, vice-chairman of ATSD Steering Committee; Gang Huang, professor of Peking University and co-chair of DOIP task group; Xihui Zhen, DONA director and co-chair of DOIP task group; Jingshen Guo, co-chair of DOIP task group, etc.

Mr. Xinmin Gao, chairman of ATSD board, first expressed his sincere congratulations on the launching of the DOIP task group. Mr. Gao pointed out that the “13th Five-Year Plan” has achieved brilliant achievements under the guiding ideology of “Internet plus”. During the “14th Five-Year Plan”, informatization will focus on the data-driven informatization. The current architecture of the Internet is difficult to support the interoperability between heterogeneous systems. As a logical extension of the Internet, DOA is an information-centric architecture, and provides the infrastructure service to help solve the interoperability issues among heterogeneous information systems over the network environment with changeable demands, fuzzy boundaries and dynamic environment. Although DOA architecture is advanced, a lot of efforts are needed to support its application. The DOIP task group is established with its mission in applying DOIP to the real world applications, and in making contributions to the national capability of interoperability among heterogeneous systems. At the same time, Mr. Gao also put forward his own expectations for ATSD, hoping that the DOIP task group can form a good development environment similar to that of IETF.

Prof. Gang Huang, co-chair of DOIP task group, reported the recent progress of the DOIP task group. The DOIP task Group originated from Dr. Robert Kahn’s visit to Peking University in October 2018. Since then, they started to cooperate on the research on the trust issue of DOA in social-cyber-physical environment. In October 2019, Dr. Kahn visited Peking University again, highly praised the research results of the cooperation, and proposed to lucubrate the research and application in the DOIP. Prof. Huang said that the vision of the DOIP task group is to promote the evolution of the existing bit/information Internet to the data/value Internet under the guidance of the concept and methodology of DOA and DOIP. At present, the DOIP task group has already made many achievements including: publishing paper in top journal IEEE TSC in November 2019; proposing the revised draft based on DOIP standard v2.0 and the reference implementation in August 2020.

After a lively discussion among the group participants, Zhengang Gao, vice chairman of ATSD Steering Committee and ATSD Chief Secretariat, made a brief summary of this kick-off meeting and affirmed the achievements of the DOIP task group. He hoped that the DOIP task group would carry out the work in a down-to-earth manner with an open attitude based on rules and a benefit sharing based cooperation mechanism, report the progress in time according to the schedule, and finally make contributions to the DOIP standard and the DOA eco-system.
